LORANE — Educators at Applegate School expected a long-term, nutritional payoff when they began bringing locally grown produce into classroom lessons.
But it turns out that the effort will also yield an immediate, financial reward: a $10,000 “Veggie Grant” from the Love Your Veggies Nationwide School Lunch Campaign.
Applegate, which serves kindergarten through sixth-grade students, was among 51 schools across the country winning such grants.
The money will be used to further immerse the rural students in the importance of fresh produce through an expanded school garden, farm field trips, nutrition lessons, harvest tastings and purchase of a salad bar for the cafeteria, Principal Kathi Holvey said.
But perhaps the most significant result will be the planned introduction of locally grown produce into the school’s cafeteria menu.
