Where sustainability is Business as Usual

To make a little green, it helps to be a little green.

A mix of Portland businesses — large and small, locally owned and otherwise — are striving to leave less of a mark on the globe. And their efforts carry economic motivations, too, especially as the recession continues.

"When you're talking about being sustainable, you're talking about being efficient," says Megan Stein, the Recycle at Work program manager for the city of Portland. Steps such as printing on both sides of a sheet of paper and upgrading air-conditioning units mean savings for businesses — and in eco-conscious Portland, it often means a bigger clientele.

"People are now asking, 'How is your business sustainable?'" Stein says. The recession has forced many small operations — which represent the vast majority of Portland businesses — to think creatively about their marketing strategies. Many have rebranded after learning that local consumers have an "overwhelming interest" in sustainability.
