Jefferson County workers average wage and salary during 2000 to 2005 has seen an improvement. On the average wages have increased form $23,255 to $26,910, an increase of $3,655, or 15.7% over the five year period. During the same period Marine Trade jobs on the average increased by $2,431, or 6.1%, the same as in the manufacturing sector.

Wage and salary levels in Jefferson County have been rising at a higher rate than the State average. Jefferson County increase during 2000-2005 has been 15.7%, from $23,255 to $26,910. During the same 2000-2005 period Washington State’s average wage and salary has increased from $41,372 to $46,000 or 11.2%.

However, comparisons with the State show us a different picture.
   
Jefferson County’s average wage and salary levels when compared to the State shows an economy that has been through a major transition since the 1970’s. A transition from one that had been mostly resource based, forestry and fishing industries and manufacturing, to one of services.
   
In 1970 Jefferson County’s average wage and salary was 89.4% of the state average. By 2005 this figure has become 58.5%.
