Many local governments throughout the state are increasing their focus on climate change, often with one eye on money-saving actions.
Jefferson County, for example, is completing an inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions as part of a new Climate Action Campaign. The inventory, in conjunction with the city of Port Townsend, will outline the "carbon footprint" of the county — including estimated energy consumption by government, businesses and residential consumers.
A resolution approved by the county commissioners calls for a Climate Action Committee to develop a plan over the next 18 months that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy. By the year 2050, the county hopes to reduce the emissions 80 percent from 1990 levels.
