Locally Grown Produce Headed for a Broader Range of Tables

Low-income families eligible for food stamps will be able to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets under a bill signed Thursday by Gov. Chris Gregoire.

The Local Farms-Healthy Kids and Communities Act also encourages school lunch programs to increase their use of local produce, promotes school gardens, and establishes a program to distribute more fresh food at food banks.

"This is being recognized as the most comprehensive local-foods program in the United States," said Tom Geiger of the Washington Environmental Council, which promoted the bill. "We're already getting calls from all around the country."
