Thursdays are the new Fridays for a growing number of workers whose employers have switched to a "4-10" workweek -- that is, four days at 10 hours each. The unconventional arrangement is finding renewed favour as evidence mounts that it leads to less absenteeism, lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint, not to mention three-day weekends, every weekend.
Some of the most compelling support comes this month from Utah, where a one-year 4-10 pilot study with some 17,000 government employees resulted in a 13-per-cent decline in energy use, an estimated 12,000-tonne reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions, and commute savings of as much as $6 million US in gasoline.
Fully 82 per cent of employees indicated they'd like to maintain the compressed workweek, though the state has yet to make a final decision.
